Some of the many splendid golf courses on offer
golfmac - clovelly Clovelly:
Designed by Dr Charles Murray in 1934, and set in the tranquil Clovelly Valley, this relatively short layout built among sand dunes, rewards accuracy off the tee and provides players with scenic views of False Bay. Known for its superb greens and magnificent clubhouse overlooking the course.
Golfmac - Royal Cape Royal Cape:
South Africa's oldest golf club designed by Dr Charles Murray in 1885, has a mature tree-lined parkland layout, with new modern greens that is always superbly groomed. There are spectacular views of the rugged Table Mountain range from all the holes. This club has hosted many of South Africa's top tournaments.
Golfmac - Mowbray Mowbray:
This relatively flat but attractive parkland course is a superb test of golf, hosting many South African Opens in the past years. Its holes are framed by mature pine trees with Table Mountain as a backdrop. Designed by SV Hotchkin in 1929 and redesigned in 1954 by Bob Grimsdell, this is a well matured course.
golfmac - stellenbosh Stellenbosch:
This course is set in the heart of the winelands, amid mountainous scenery, with some holes bordering vineyards. This is a parkland layout that is a delight to play, with huge trees framing the fairways. Sheltered from the south-easter by the mountains, this is the perfect getaway from the Cape Doctor. It was designed by Ken Elkin and hosted the 1999 SA Open and 2005 World Amateur Matchplay Championships.
golfmac - westlake Westlake:
Close to the False Bay coast, closely overlooked by the mountain range, this parkland course is a great favourite amongst tourists. Built on sandy soil, therefore great drainage, it is known to be playable throughout the year, including the wet winter months. Designed and built by the members in 1932.
golfmac - rondebosh Rondebosch:
Situated across the N2 motorway from Mowbray golf club, this parkland layout, undulating in places, is a challenging test of golf with some narrow holes which has undergone tremendous improvements and beautification in recent years. The military committee designed it in 1911 and it is known to be in excellent condition throughout the year.
golfmac - Bellville Bellville:
Renowned for its superb conditioning and excellent bent grass greens, this undulating parkland layout is a true test of golf and endurance. Watch out for "Cardiac Hill", the steeply uphill par-four 11th hole, which can take your breath away. This course is sheltered from the Cape south-easter which makes it pleasant to play in the summer months. Designed in 1979 by Bob Grimsdell and Bill Kerr, then revamped by Mark Muller in 1994.
Some of the many splendid estate courses
golfmac - Arabella Arabella:
A championship venue designed by Peter Matkovich in a magnificent setting alongside the Bot Lagoon that will test the best of golfers. It's also very playable for the average hacker, having a fair amount of room from the front tees. The splendid scenery and exquisite fauna and flora is a feature of the round.
golfmac - erinvale Erinvale:
Host of the 1996 World Cup of Golf, this is an estate course of two distinctly different nines. The front nine is on the flat, while the back nine climbs up the lower slopes of the magnificent Helderberg mountain. There are some breathtaking views of the False Bay coastline from some of the top holes. This is a Gary Player course design.
golfmac - de zalze De Zalze:
Set in the Stellenbosch Winelands, this is a relatively new layout designed by Peter Matkovich that is improving all the time. The front nine is relatively open, and it is when you reach the back nine that the real beauty of the course is unveiled. As co-host of the 2005 World Amateur Matchplay Championship it really lived up to its reputation.
golfmac - steenberg Steenberg:
Another residential estate layout built around a producing vineyard, and overlooked by mountains and forests. It's a flat site that has been transformed into a very attractive and superbly conditioned layout, with parkland and wetland features with large areas of waste bunkers. Designed by Peter Matkovich.
golfmac - pearl valley Pearl Valley:
This was the second Jack Nicklaus signature design to be opened in South Africa in 2003. Nicklaus was in top creative form in laying this out on a flat property between the Paarl mountain range and the Berg River. Tremendous design, well bunkered, very fair for all levels of golfer, that asks for top class approach shots. Breathtaking views all round through will welcome you.
golfmac - boschenmeer Boschenmeer:
The old Paarl Golf Club parkland course has been modernised and upgraded, and an additional 9 holes added as part of the new Boschenmeer golf estate, providing a 27 hole facility. David Frost was involved in the redesign with Danie Obermeyer. The changes now bring the Berg River more into play, and there are lots of new holes to be played. With views of Paarl Rock and the Du Toits Kloof mountains this is truly a beautiful layout.

My passion for golf began at the age of 12 and in the 90’s I was privileged to caddy for Jose Maria Canizares of Spain. I have been a single figure golfer for 20 years and as a low handicap golfer I have played most of the golf courses in and around Cape Town and the Garden Route. My love of golf has inspired me to share this with others and especially to share my enjoyment of our scenic courses with visitors to Cape Town.
As far as my personal enjoyment of golf goes, my home club is Clovelly, who I represent in Premier League and Mid Amateur.
